Do you remember the fable of the tortoise and the hare? A town’s crops were on the verge of failing and it desperately needed a special fertilizer from the next town. And they needed it before spring floods blocked off the road. The townspeople selected the tortoise and the hare to fetch the elixir and bring it back. The hare sprinted out of the town gates and the tortoise plodded along behind. Soon the hare was so far ahead he couldn’t see the tortoise any more. He laughed and laughed so hard he felt tired. “Haha that tortoise is hopeless”, he said. I’ll just lie down here and take a little nap. Later I’ll go extra fast and I’ll still beat him.” He imagined how everyone would admire him back home.
The tortoise kept moving. Some days were sunny and warm. Other days the wind screamed and the rain pelted down. But the tortoise believed in his path and he kept putting one foot in front of the other, day by day. After a while the hare woke up. He stretched and yawned and said, “Where was I? Ah yes. I’ll sprint to the next town and get the fertilizer.” The hare ran as hard as he could but he was too late and the roads were blocked. He trudged back, scared of what he would find. But when he got home the crops were green and thriving because the tortoise had delivered. While the hare slept the tortoise had kept moving forward. With the tiniest steps he’d achieved what the hare could not.
Can you imagine how bleak the tortoise’s prospects would have felt if he had compared himself to the speedy hare? Did he stop and tell himself not to bother, that he would never reach his destination? Nope. He continued on his personal journey. He kept moving.
Gord and I and friends doing the One Year Diet. If you look back on who you are and everything that made you the person you are today, can you point to any one-month effort that got you what you wanted? Ya me too. We’re in life for the long haul and we’re going to take our time and enjoy the journey. The goal of the one year diet isn’t to be some number a year from now. The goal is the doing. The goal is to do three things every day for a year. What we want is health. Health means freedom. It’s the freedom to go where you want, when you want. Healthy weight is a side effect of healthy living. Live the life and the weight will follow.
The one year diet – Three things to DO every day:
- FOOD: Make nourishing food from scratch. Mostly :)
- FITNESS: Move our bodies 30 minutes every day.
- PEOPLE: Give thanks for the good people in our lives.
We’re keeping it s-i-m-p-l-e! I never loved math and we don’t count calories.
Tiny steps add up big. Be the tortoise, not the hare. This time next year – you and me – healthier. And happier.
